Simplified interpretation:
Surat Saba' is one of the five Surahs of the Holy Quran that begin with Praise, and it carries many acknowledgments of Allah's power and knowledge that encompass whatever is on the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah cites the blessings that He has bestowed upon the Prophet David, the Prophet Solomon, and the people of Saba'. And Allah confirms that the intercession does not benefit with Him except for whom He has permitted, and He has sent His Messenger Muhammad (PBUH) to all mankind, Arabs and Non-Arabs, then Allah cites some scenes of the quarreling of the people of Hellfire on the day of resurrection.
Allah says in the first two verses (1,2) "Praise be to Allah, the One to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and for Him the Praise in the Hereafter, and He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware, He knows what goes down in the earth and what comes out from it, and what descends from the heaven and what ascends therein, and He is the Most Merciful, the All-forgiving", that is, Allah praises Himself saying Praise be Allah, the One who possesses the authority of whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth as the universe is under His disposal and subjugation, and for Him the praise in the Hereafter as well, and it is also under His disposal, so praise be to Him alone in the worldly life and the Hereafter, and He is the All-Wise who manages His creation with wisdom in His laws and destiny, the All-Aware of their deeds, and He knows what penetrates the earth from seeds and water, and what comes out from it of crops and fruits. He also knows what descends from the sky Like rain and the destiny of the servants and what ascends therein from Angels and the deeds of the servants, and He is Most Merciful and All-Forgiving for those who repent and believe.
Allah says in the next two verses (3,4) "And those who disbelieve say the Hour will not come to us, Say, but by My Lord, it will surely come to you, the Knower of the unseen, nothing is hidden from Him of an atom's weight in the heavens, nor on the earth, nor smaller than that, and nor greater except in a clear book, so that He may reward those who believe and do righteous deeds, those will have forgiveness and a noble provision", that is, Allah commanded His Messenger for the second time throughout the Holy Quran to swear by His Lord for the occurrence and the existence of the resurrection, and the other two times are in Aya (53) of Surat Yunus, and Aya (7) of Surat Altaghabun, so Allah commanded His Messenger to assure the infidels of Quraish who claimed that the Hour (the day of resurrection) will not com to them that it will surely come, and Allah is the Knower of the unseen as He knows everything that His servants can not see, and nothing is hidden from Him of an atom's weight in the heavens, nor on the earth, nor smaller than that, and nor greater except in a clear book where Allah's Messenger Muhammad (PBUH) said in narration of Ubadah bin Alsamit: ''Verily, the first of what Allah created was the pen, He said to it Write, so it wrote what will be forever" (Jami' Altirmidhi 3319), so Allah will give life to the dead on the day of resurrection, and will recompense man for his deeds as He has recorded what they have sent forth and their traces, and has enumerated everything in a clear register as mentioned in Aya (12) Surat yaseen, thereupon, He will reward those who believe in Him, His Messengers, and His books, and do righteous deeds, and they will have forgiveness for their sins and a noble provision in Paradise.
Allah says in the next two verses (5,6) "And those who strive against Our verses to cause failure, those will have a punishment of painful punishment, and those who have been given the knowledge see that what is revealed to You from Your Lord is the truth, and it guides to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy", that is, the infidels of Quraish who strive against Allah's verses in order to cause failure, to refute Allah's signs, and to prevent others from the way of Allah, will have the severest and the worst punishment in Hellfire on the day of resurrection, but as for those who have been given knowledge see that the Holy Quran which is revealed to Muhammad (PBUH) from His Lord is the truth, where only those who have knowledge about Allah are those who fear Him from among His servants as mentioned in Aya (28) of Surat Fatir, so they believed in the Holy Quran and see that it guides to the path of Allah, the Almighty who is Severe in His revenge on those who disobeyed Him, the Praiseworthy of all what He decrees.
Allah says in the next two verses (7,8) "And those who disbelieve say Shall we direct you to a man who informs you that when you are torn, total torn, you will be in a new creation?, Has He invented a lie about Allah or is a madness in Him?, but those who do not believe in the Hereafter are in the punishment and far error", that is, the infidels of Quraish used to mock Allah's Messenger, and they said out of their denial of the resurrection Shall we direct to a man who informs you that when your bodies are dispersed in the earth and every bone is lost in it and you are totally torn apart you will be in a new creation, and you will be reconstructed, thereupon Allah says as a denunciation of their denial of the resurrection Has Muhammad invented a lie about Allah, or Is a madness in Him?, unquestionably, the matter is no as they claimed, and Muhammad has told the truth form His Lord and He is not madman who speaks unreasonably, but rather those who do not believe in the Hereafter and deny the resurrection are in disbelief and extreme error which will lead them to the severe punishment on the day of resurrection.
Allah says in the next verse (9) "Have they not see what is before them and what is behind them of the sky and the earth?, if We will, We will cause the earth to swallow them, or cause fragments from the sky to fall upon them, indeed in that there is a sign for every servant who is oft-returning", that is, Allah cites His great power in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and Allah marvels at the polytheists who see the greatness of the creation of the heavens and the earth for wherever they go, in front of them or behind them, right or left, they will see the sky as a roof over them, and the earth as a bed under them, so the One who has created the heavens and the earth is Able to do whatever He wills, and if He wills, He will cause the earth to swallow them as He did with Qarun as mentioned in Surat Alqasas Aya (81) "And We caused the earth to swallow him and his home", or He will cause fragments from the sky to fall upon them, and in that there is a sign for every fearful and humbled servant who always turns to his Lord in repentance.
Allah says in the next two verses (10,11) "And indeed, We gave David a bounty from Us, O mountains! Repeat praises with Him, and the birds, and We made the iron soft for Him, that Make armors and Measure the links and do righteousness, indeed, I am All-Seeing of what you do", that is, Allah cites the bounty that He had bestowed upon the Prophet David (Dawud) as He ordered the mountains and the birds to repeat praises with Him, so the mountains used to glorify with David in the evening and the sunrise, likewise, the birds were assembled to glorify with Him as mentioned in Ayat (18,19) of Surat Sad, and Allah made the iron soft for Him in order to make armors, and He taught Him how to make armors and ordered Him to maintain balance in combining the rings of the armors, and Allah ordered Him and His family to do righteous deeds, and Allah is All-Seeing of what they do and nothing is hidden from Him.
Allah says in the next verse (12) "And for Solomon the wind, its morning journey was month, and it afternoon journey was month, and We caused a spring of copper to flow for Him, and of the Jinn were those who worked before Him by the permission of His Lord, and whoever among them deviates from Our command, We will make him taste of the punishment of the Blaze", that is, Allah has bestowed His bounty upon Solomon, the son of David, as He subjected the wind to Him where its journey in the morning was equal to the journey of one month, and its journey in the afternoon was equal to the journey of another month, and it was obedient to Solomon, running by His command wherever He directed it as mentioned in Aya (36) of Surat Sad, and Allah made the copper to melt and to come out of the earth like the springs of water for Solomon to use as he pleased, and Allah has subjected the Jinn for Him, so of the Jinn were those who worked before Him by the permission of Allah, and they were subjected in construction work and diving in the seas as mentioned in Aya (37) of Surat Sad, and whomever deviated from Allah's command to obey Solomon, Allah will make him to taste the punishment of the Blaze on the day of resurrection.
Allah says in the next two verses (13,14) "They used to make for Him whatever He wished of elevated buildings, and statues, and basins like reservoirs, and fixed cooking-pots, O family of David! Work in gratitude, but few of My servants are grateful, then when We decreed the death for Him, nothing gave them any indication of His death except the moving creature of the earth eating his staff, but when He fell down, the Jinn became clear that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in the humiliating punishment", that is, the Jinn were subjected to make whatever Solomon wished of elevated buildings whether for housing or worship, and they used to make statues for Solomon but statues are forbidden in Islam where as narrated by Abu Hurayrah: ''I heard the Prophet saying, Allah said Who are most unjust than those who try to create something like My creation, I challenge them to create even a smallest ant, a wheat grain or a barely grain", and Allah's Messenger said in narration of Ibn Umar: "The painters of these pictures will be punished on the day of resurrection, and it will be said to them Make alive what you have created". The Jinn also made the basins in which the water is collected, and the cooking pots that are fixed in their places due to their large size, so Allah commanded Solomon and His family to work in gratitude for the blessings He bestowed upon them and singled them out for, so Obey Allah in His commands and prohibitions and Hasten to please Him; For gratitude does not occur through tongue, but rather through actions and obedience, while praising Allah occurs through the tongue, therefore, Allah assures that few of His servants are grateful. When Allah decreed the death of Solomon, He remained leaning on His staff for a long time, and the Jinn remained harnessed to hard work, but when the insect of the earth (Termite) ate His staff, it became weak and Solomon fell down to the ground, and the Jinn knew that He had died, and they became clear that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in the humiliating punishment and the hard work.
Allah says in the next three verses (15-17) "And indeed, there was a sign for Saba' in their dwelling place, two gardens on the right and on the left, Eat from the provision of Your Lord, and Give thanks to Him a good land, and a Forgiving Lord, but they turned away, so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two gardens with two gardens of bitter fruit, and tamarix and something of few lote-trees, that We recompensed them because they disbelieved and Do We recompense except the ungrateful?", that is, Saba' was a kingdom in the land of Yemen, and there was a sign in their dwelling place which indicates that there in no God for them except the One who bestowed upon them the blessings that they were in, where they have two gardens of fruits and trees on the right and on the left, and it was said to them Eat from the provision of your Lord and Give thanks to Him for what He has bestowed upon you, a good land and a Forgiving Lord for your sins if you obey Him, but they turned away from obeying Allah, from worshiping Him, and from thanking Him for what He has bestowed upon them, so Allah sent upon them the flood of the dam, then the water overflowed on their gardens, spoiling the fruits and the crops therein, and after the ripe fruit, the shadows, and the flowing rivers, it turned into two gardens of bitter fruit, tamarix, and few lote-trees with many thorns and little fruit, and that was a recompense of their disbelief where only the ungrateful ones shall be punished with the same punishment for they denied Allah's blessings and worshipped other than Him.
Allah says in the next two verses (18,19) "And We made between them and the towns which We had blessed in it, visible towns, and We determined the journey between them, Travel between them safely by night and by day, but they said Our Lord! Lengthen between our journeys, and they wronged themselves, so We made them statements, and We dispersed them a total dispersion, indeed, in that are signs for every patient, grateful", that is, Allah had bestowed upon Saba' visible towns between them and the towns which He had blessed in it, and it were close to each other with many trees, fruits, and crops, so the traveler does not need to carry provisions or water on his journey, but rather wherever he lands, he finds water and fruits, and Allah determined the journey between the towns according to what the travelers need, and they used to travel therein nights and days in safety, but they did not thank Allah for these blessings, but rather they wished for long travels and toil in life and asked Allah to make their journey more distant, and they wronged themselves by their disbelief and ungratefulness, so Allah made them a statement for the people, narrating of their news as Allah dispersed them a total dispersion on the lands after gathering and comfort life, and in that are lessons for every patient, grateful, for he must be thankful for Allah's blessings when He bestowed upon him, and must be patient with the trial if Allah tried him with a calamity, where as narrated by Suhaib that Allah's Messenger said: "How amazing is the matter of the believer that his affairs are all good, and that is not for anyone except for the believer, if he was bestowed with a blessing, he thanks, and this is good for him, and if a calamity befell him, he was patient, and that is good for him" (Sahih Muslim 2999).
Allah says in the next two verses (20,21) "And indeed, Iblis has found his assumption true about them, so they followed him except a group of the believers, and he did not have any authority over them except that We should know the one who believes in the Hereafter from the one who has doubt thereof, and Your Lord is Oft-Preserver over everything", that is, Allah confirms that Saba' followed Iblis (Satan) and denied Allah's signs and proofs, so Iblis found his assumption true about them, where he swore by Allah's Might that He will lead the children of Adam astray except those whom Allah has purified them for His worship as mentioned in Ayat (82,83) of Surat Sad, so they followed Iblis except a group of the believers, although Iblis has no argument against them to mislead them but Allah has given him authority over them in order to distinguish the one who believes in the Hereafter and the resurrection from the one who disbelieve in the Hereafter and is not certain of the resurrection, and Allah is Oft-Preserver over everything as He preserves their deeds, and He will recompense them on the day of resurrection for what they earned in the worldly life of good and evil.
Allah says in the next two verses (22,23) "Say Call upon those whom you claim besides Allah, they do not possess an atom's weight in the heavens nor on the earth, and they do not have any partnership in both of them, and He has not any supporter from them, and the intercession does not benefit with Him except for whom He has permitted until when fear is removed from their hearts, they will say What did your Lord say?, they will say the truth, and He is the Most High, the Most Grand", that is, Allah commanded His Messenger to said to the polytheists of Quraish to call the idols whom they claim besides Allah, they will not benefit them nor will they harm them for they do not possess an atom's weight in the heavens nor on the earth, they do not have any partnership in both of them, and they are not able to create anything even the crust of a date-seed as mentioned in Aya (13) of Surat Fatir, and Allah is free of need of these idols, and He has not any supporter from them, and the intercession of these idols will not benefit them as they claimed that these idols are their intercessors with Allah as mentioned in Aya (18) of Surat Yunus, so Allah confirms that the intercession does not benefit with Him except for whom He has permitted, even the intercession of Angels will not be accepted except by the permission of Allah, and they are in complete submission to Allah, where as narrated by Abu Hurayrah: "Allah's Prophet said when Allah decrees some order in the heaven, the Angels flutter their wings indicating complete surrender to His saying which sounds like chains being dragged on rock, and when fear is removed from their hearts, they will say What did your Lord say?, they will say that He has said the truth, and He is the Most High, the Most Grand", then the stealthy listeners hear this order and these stealthy listener are like this (Sufyan demonstrated that by holding his hand upright and separating the fingers) a stealthy listener hears a word which he will convey to that which is below him and the second will convey it to that which is below him till the last of them will convey it to the magician or the soothsayer, some time a flame may strike the devil before he can convey it, and sometimes he may convey it before the flame strikes him, whereupon the magician adds to that word a hundred lies, the people will then say Didn't he tell such-and-such a thing on such-and-such date?, so that magician is said to have told the truth of the statement which has been heard from the heaven".
Allah says in the next four verses (24-27) "Say Who provides you from the heavens and the earth?, Say Allah, and indeed, We or you are upon guidance or in a clear error, Say, you will not be asked about sins we committed, and We will not be asked about what you do, Say Our Lord will gather us together, then He will judge between us with the truth, and He is the Judge, the All-Knower, Say Show me those whom you have associated with Him as partners, nay! but He is Allah, the Almighty, the All-Wise", that is, Allah commanded His Messenger to ask the polytheists of Quraish Who sends down water from the sky, and brings forth thereby various colors and shapes of fruits and grain, unquestionably, Allah is the Provider not their idols that do not possess an atom's weight in the heavens nor on the earth as shown above, then Allah commanded His Messenger to assure them that the believers and the disbelievers are not the same, one of the two parties is upon guidance and the other is upon misguidance, and to assure them that disbelievers will not be asked about the sins committed by the believers, and the believers will not be asked about what the disbelievers do, and Allah will gather all of them together on the day of resurrection and He will judge between them with justice for is the just Judge, and He is All-Knower of everything. And Allah commanded His Messenger to ask the polytheists to show Him the idols whom they have made partners to Allah, nay He has no equal or partner, and there is no God but Allah, the All-Mighty who is Severe in His revenge on those who disobeyed Him, and He is All-Wise who manages His creation with wisdom in His laws and destiny.
Allah says in the next three verses (28-30) "And We did not send You except to all mankind, a bearer of glad tidings and a warner, but most people do not know, and they say When is this promise, if you are truthful?, Say for you the appointment of a day from which you can not delay for an hour and you can not precede", that is, Allah assures His Messenger that He did not send Him except to all mankind, Arabs and Non-Arabs, and Allah's Messenger (PBUH) said in narration of Jabir bin Abdullah: "I have been given five things which were not given to anyone else before Me, Allah made Me victorious by awe (By His frightening My enemies) for a distance of one month's journey, the earth has been made for Me a place for praying, and a thing to perform Tayammum, therefore, anyone of My followers can pray wherever the time of the prayer is due, the booty has been made lawful for Me yet it was not lawful for anyone else before Me, I have been given the right of intercession (on the day of resurrection), and every Prophet used to be sent to His nation only, but I have been sent to all mankind" (Sahih Albukhari 335), so Allah's Messenger (PBUH) was sent to all mankind as a bearer of glad tidings of Paradise for those who obey Allah, and a warner of Hellfire for those who disobey Him, but most of people do not know that, where the polytheist said out of their denial of the resurrection "When is this promise, if you are truthful?", they ask about the day of resurrection, so Allah commanded His Messenger to assure them that the day of resurrection will inevitably happen, and it is an appointment of a day from which they can not delay for an hour and they can not precede.
Allah says in the next three verses (31-33) "And those who disbelieve say we will never believe in this Quran nor in that which was before it, but If You could see when the wrongdoers will be made to stand before their Lord, they will refer the saying back to each other, those who have been deemed weak will say to those who were arrogant, if it were not you, we would have been believers, those who were arrogant will say to those who have been deemed weak Did we prevent you from guidance after it had come to you?, but you were criminals, and those who have been deemed weak will say to those who were arrogant but the plot by day and night when you were ordering us to disbelieve in Allah and to make equals to Him, but they will conceal regret when they see the punishment, and we will put the shackles on the necks of those who disbelieved, Are they recompensed except for what they used to do?", that is, the polytheists persisted on their disbelief and said that they will not believe in the Holy Quran nor in the books and the Prophets before it, so Allah threatens them, and informs them of their humiliating condition on the day of resurrection when they will be made to stand in front of Him as they will quarrel with each other and will curse each other, and the quarreling of the people of the fire is truth as mentioned in Aya (64) of Surat Sad, so the followers and the leaders will turn the word back to each other, and the followers who have been deemed weak will say to their leaders who were arrogant if you were not misleading us, we would have been believers, but the leaders will turn the saying back to the followers and will say "Did we prevent you from guidance after it had come to you?, but you were criminals", viz, we did not do more to you than we invited you, so you followed us, and denied the guidance after it had come to you because you are criminal people, preferring disbelief over faith and misguidance over guidance. Then the followers who have been deemed weak will turn the saying back to their leaders who were arrogant and will say but you have plotted and deceived us day and night when you were ordering us to disbelieve in Allah and to make partners to Him, but they all, the followers and the leaders, will conceal the regret when they see the punishment of the Hellfire; because they will realize that the blame of each other will not save them from Allah's punishment, and Allah will put the shackles on their necks, and He will recompense them for what they used to do in the worldly life.
Allah says in the next three verses (34-36) "And We did not send a warner in a town except its wealthy ones said, indeed, we are disbelievers in what you have been sent with, and they say we are more in wealth and children and we will not be punished, Say, indeed, My lord extends provision for whom He wills, and restricts, but most of people do not know", that is, the polytheists of Quraish did not differ from the previous nations for they said as the same the previous nations said, where Allah did not send any warner before Muhammad (PBUH) in a town except its wealthy ones said to their Messengers "We are disbelievers in what you have been sent with", and they claimed that their wealth and children will save them from Allah's punishment; because they think that the abundance of wealth and children is an evidence of Allah's love for them, and that He would not give them these blessings in the worldly life then punish them in the Hereafter, thereupon, Allah commanded His Messenger to assure them that He extends provision for whom He wills and restricts, so He makes whoever He wills rich, and whoever He wills poor, but most of people do not know Allah's wisdom in distributing His provision, but it is not evidence of Allah's love where He says in Ayat (33-35) of Surat Alzukhruf "And were it not that the people will become one religion, We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Gracious, roofs of silver for their houses, and stairways upon which they ascend, and doors for their houses, and couches upon which they recline, and ornaments of gold, and all that is nothing but an enjoyment of the worldly life, and the Hereafter with Your lord is for the righteous".
Allah says in the next three verses (37-39) "And neither your wealth nor your children that which will bring you close to us in status, but whoever believes and does righteousness, then those, for them, the double reward for what they did, and they will be secure in the chambers, and those who strive against Our verses to cause failure, those will be brought into the punishment, Say indeed, My Lord extends the provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts for him, and whatever you spend of anything, then He compensates it, and He is the Best of Providers", that is, Allah assures the disbelievers that neither their wealth nor their children will bring them close to Allah in status, but rather belief and good deeds will bring the servant close to His Lord, so those who believe and do righteousness will have a double reward on the day of resurrection for what they used to do in the worldly life, and they will be in the upper chambers of paradise, safe from punishment and other calamities, but as for the disbelievers who strive against Allah verses in order to cause failure, to refute Allah's signs, and to prevent others from the way of Allah, they will be brought into the punishment of Hellfire on the day of resurrection. Then Allah commanded His Messenger to assure them that Allah extends the provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts for him, and what benefits the servant is what was in obedience to Allah, so Allah urges him to spend in His way and He will compensate it for Allah is the Best of Providers where none can provide sustenance like Him, nor can bless with the same as His blessings, and Allah's Messenger said in narration of Abu Hurayrah: "Every day two Angels come down from heaven and one of them says O Allah! compensate every person who spends in your way, and the other says O Allah! destroy every miser".
Allah says in the next three verses (40-42) "And the day He will gather them, then He will say to the Angels Did these used to worship you?, they will say, Glory be to You, You are our Protector not them, but they used to worship the Jinn, most of them were believers in them, so this day, some of you do not possess benefit nor harm to others, and We will say to those who wronged Taste the punishment of the fire which you used to deny", that is, Allah will gather all creatures on the day of resurrection, and He will ask the Angels whom the disbelievers worshiped besides Allah ''Did these used to worship you?", but the Angels will disavow their worship, will glorify Allah, and will acknowledge that Allah is their Protector not the disbelievers, but the disbelievers worshiped the Jinn and obeyed them, and most of them were believers in the Jinn as they obeyed them in what they commanded till they mislead them and adorned the worship of idols in their hearts, so, on the day of resurrection, some of them have no power to benefit or harm others, and the gods that they worshiped besides Allah, whether they were Angels, Jinn, or idols, will not save them from Allah's Punishment, and it will be said to them as a reprimand "Taste the punishment of the fire which you used to deny".
Allah says in the next three verses (43-45) ''And when Our clear verses are recited to them, they say this is nothing but a man who wishes to prevent you from what your fathers used to worship, and they say this is nothing but an invented lie, and those who disbelieved said about the truth when it came to them this is nothing but a clear magic, and We did not give them any books which they could study, and We did not send to them any warner before You, and those before them denied, and they did not attain a tenth of what We gave to them, but they denied My Messengers, so How was My rejection?", that is, when the clear verses of the Holy Quran are recited to the infidels of Quraish, they said that Allah's Messenger Muhammad (PBUH) is nothing but a man who intends to prevent them from the religion of their forefathers and the idols that they used to worship, and they said that the Holy Quran is an invented lie by Allah's Messenger, and those who disbelieved said about the truth when it came to them from their Lord this is nothing but a clear magic. They accused Allah's Messenger of being a liar, and that the Holy Quran is a clear magic, whereas Allah did not give them any book before the Holy Quran, and did not send a Messenger to them before Muhammad (PBUH), so that their denial is in order to adhere to their book and their messenger, but rather, they have no basis of what they are in of the polytheism except for the imitation of their forefathers as mentioned in Surat Alzukhruf Aya (23), then Allah threatens them that He destroyed those before them of the previous nations who disbelieved in Allah and denied their Messengers, although the polytheists of Quraish did not attain a tenth of what Allah gave them as they were more numerous than them and they were greater in might and in traces left on the earth as mentioned in Aya (82) of Surat Ghafir, but their might did not avail them from Allah's punishment, and How was Allah's rejection of their denial?, unquestionably, Allah punished them with a severe and painful torment.
Allah says in the next two verses (46,47) "Say I only advise you of one, that you stand for Allah, pairs and individuals, then reflect, if there a madness in your companion, He is only a warner to you before a severe punishment, Say, if I asked you for a wage, then it is yours, My reward is only upon Allah, and He is Witness over everything", that is, Allah commanded His Messenger to say to the disbelievers who accused Him of madness that He advises them of one thing, that they stand for Allah sincerely, and get ride of their whims then reflect on the matter of Muhammad in pairs and individuals, and to ask each other and ask themselves if there a madness in Him, indeed, He is a warner to you before a severe punishment befalls you on the day of resurrection, then Allah commanded Him to assure them that He did not ask them for a wage for conveying Allah's message to them, and if He asked them for a wage, then let them take it, but His reward is only upon Allah, and He is a Witness over everything as nothing is hidden from Him, and He will reward everyone for his deeds.
Allah says in the next three verses (48-50) "Say, indeed, My Lord sends forth the truth, the All-Knower of the unseen, Say the truth has come, and the falsehood can neither originate nor repeat, Say if I go astray, then I shall go astray only against Myself, and if I am guided, then it is by what My Lord reveals to Me, indeed, He is All-Hearing, Ever-Near", that is, Allah commanded His Messenger to assure the polytheists of Quraish that He sends forth the truth, which is the revelation, to whomever He wills of His servants, and He is the All-Knower of the unseen as nothing is hidden from Him in the heavens or on the earth, commanded Him to assure them that the truth has come from Allah, but as for the falsehood that they followed, it has gone away as it can neither originate nor repeat anything, and the falsehood will disappear but the truth will remain; because Allah sends forth the truth upon the falsehood, and it crushes the falsehood, then behold! It vanishes as mentioned in Aya (18) of Surat Alanbiyaa, and as narrated by Abdullah" ''The Prophet (PBUH) entered Mecca on the day of conquest of Mecca, there was sixty idols around the Ka'ba (The Sanctuary House), He began to thrust them with the stick that was in His hand saying Aya (81) of Surat Alisraa "Truth has come, and falsehood has departed, indeed, the falsehood is bound to depart", and the current Aya "The truth has come, and the falsehood can neither originate nor repeat". Allah also commanded Him to assure them that if He goes astray, then the consequence of misguidance will be against Himself, and if He is guided, then it is by what Allah reveals to Him from the truth and guidance, and Allah is All-Hearing whose Hearing encompasses everything, Ever-Near to His servants and He is with them wherever they are, so He hears the sayings of His servants, and answers the call of the supplicant if he calls upon Him.
Allah says in the last four verses (51-54) "And if You could see when they will be terrified then there will be no escape, and they will be seized from a near place, and they will say we believe in it, but How for them the taking from a far place, and indeed, they disbelieved in it before, and they utter about the unseen from a far place, and a barrier will be placed between them and what they desire as was done with their ancestors before, indeed, they were in confusing doubt", that is, Allah addresses His Messenger and says if You could see when the polytheists of Quraish will be terrified on the day of resurrection, then there will be no refuge from Allah's punishment, and they will be seized from their graves, and they will say on the day of resurrection when they see the punishment "We believe in it", but How can they achieve the belief from a far place as they have been far from the place of its acceptance, they disbelieved in it before, and they uttered conjectures by inventing lies and falsehood about the unseen, and denied the resurrection, so their faith did not benefit them when they saw Allah's punishment, the rule of Allah that has passed among His servants as mentioned in Aya (85) of Surat Ghafir, thereupon a barrier will be placed between them and the repentance as was done with those who disbelieved before them of the previous nations, and they are in confusing doubt; because they were not certain of the truth and their denial was not out of insight, but rather they said it without proof or evidence.
