Wa bada lahum saiyyi-atuo ma ameluo wa haqa behim ma kanuo behi yastahze-uon (33).
And the evil of what they did will appear to them, so they have been encircled by what they used to ridicule it.
Wa qeela alyawma nansakum kama nasetum leqaa yawmekum haza wa ma'wakumuo alnaruo wa ma lakum men nasereen (34).
And it will be said, today we forget you just as you forgot the meeting of this day of yours, and your abode is the fire, and there are no helpers for you.
Zalekum be-annakumuo ettakhaztum ayati ellahi huzuwan wa gharratkumuo Alhayatuo aldunya fal-yawma la youkhrajuna menha wa la hum yousta'tabuon (35).
That is because you took the verses of Allah as a ridicule, and the worldly life deceived you, so that day, they will not be brought out of it, nor will they be asked to appease.
Fa-lellahi alhamduo Rabbi alsamawati wa Rabbi alardi Rabbi al-alameen (36).
So, for Allah is all praise, the Lord of the heavens and the Lord of the earth, the Lord of the worlds.
Wa lahuo alkebriyauo fee alsamawati wa alardi wa huwa alazizu Alhakeem (37).
And to Him belongs the grandeur in the heavens and the earth and He is the All-mighty, the All-Wise.
Simplified interpretation:
Surat Aljathiyah begins with two letters of the Arabic language, just like 28 Surahs of the Holy Quran that start with individual letters ranging from one to five letters. It is noticeable that in all 29 Surahs the book or the Holy Quran is mentioned whether it is immediately after these letters or it is included in the Surah or even at the end of it. It is a challenge from Allah, Almighty, to the infidels of Quraish, as if Allah says to them this is the book in the letters of the language you speak, but you will not be able to produce the like of it, and He has already challenged them in Aya (88) of Surat Alisraa "Say, if mankind and the Jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants". As for the current Surah, it begins with two letters "Ha and Meem" or "H and M" in English followed by "The revelation of the book is from Allah, the All-mighty, the All-Wise", but the knowledge of these letters remains with Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
Allah says in the first two verses "Ha meem, the revelation of the book is from Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise", that is, Allah confirms that He has revealed the Holy Quran upon His Messenger Muhammad (PBUH), and He is All-Mighty who is Severe in His revenge on those who disobeyed Him, and He is All-Wise who manages His creation with wisdom in His laws and destiny.
Allah cites His great power in the creation of the heavens, the earth, the mankind, the living creatures, the day and the night, the rain, and the wind in the next four verses (3-6) "Indeed, in the heavens and the earth, there are signs for the believers, and in the creation of yourselves and what He disperses of a moving creature, are signs for a people who are certain, and in the alternation of the night and the day, and what Allah has sent down from the sky of provision, by which He has revived the earth after its death, and in direction of the wind, are signs for a people who give reason, these are verses of Allah which we recite to You in truth, so in what statement, after Allah and His signs, will they believe?", that is, Allah guides man to reflect on His signs in the creation of mankind and the world around them, where there are signs and proofs for the believers in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in what is on the earth of various creatures of humans and every creature that moves on the earth including animals, birds, beasts, insects and what is in the sea of various kinds. And there are also signs in the alternation of the night and the day, one with light and the other with darkness, likewise, there are signs in the rain that Allah has sent down from the sky, then revives the earth after its death and brings forth fruits, vegetables, and grain as a sustenance for mankind and other creatures, and there are also signs in the direction of the wind to the south and to the north where it has a role in rainfall and plant pollination. And Allah assures in these four verses that His signs are a guidance for those who believe in Allah, those who are certain, and those who understand and reflect on the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, but as for the infidels, if they are not guided by these signs and understand it, there will no other way for them to believe, so that Allah addresses His Messenger and says "These are verses of Allah which we recite to You in truth, so in what statement, after Allah and His signs, will they believe?".
Accordingly, Allah threatens them with the torment of Hellfire in the Hereafter in the next five verses (7-11) and says "Woe to every sinful liar, who hears Allah's verses recited to him, then He persists arrogantly as if he has not heard it, so give him the tidings of a painful punishment, and when he knows anything of our verses, he takes them in ridicule, those will have a humiliating punishment, Before them is Hellfire, and what they had earned will not avail them anything, nor what they had taken as protectors besides Allah, and for them is a great punishment, this is a guidance, and those who disbelieved in the verses of their Lord for them a punishment of painful punishment", that is, Allah threatens the disbeliever who is a sinful liar with a painful torment and says "Woe to every sinful liar", so his recompense will be Hellfire on the day of resurrection where the word woe (Wail) idiomatically carries the meaning of destruction and perishing and means that the torment will be for him as a recompense for his deeds.
The sinful liar deserves the torment of Hellfire because when he hears the verses of the Holy Quran recited to Him, he insists on his disbelieve and ingratitude, out of his arrogance and stubbornness, as if he had not heard it, so Allah commanded His Messenger to give him the tidings of a painful torment on the day of resurrection. Even when he knew anything of the verses of the Holy Quran, he took it in jest and mockery so he will be among those who will have a shameful and humiliating punishment, and the Hellfire will be in front of them on the day of resurrection and what they had earned in the worldly life of wealth and children will not avail them of the punishment of Hellfire, nor the idols, they had taken as protectors besides Allah, will save them from the great punishment that awaits them, then Allah confirms that the Holy Quran is a guidance, and those who disbelieved in the verses of their Lord will have the severest and the worst punishment in Hellfire on the day of resurrection.
Allah enumerates His blessings upon mankind in the next two verses (12,13) "Allah is the One who subjected to you the sea so that the ships may sail therein by His command, and so that you may seek of His bounty, and that you may give thanks, and He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, all from Him, indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought", that is, Allah has made the sea subservient for mankind by making it carries ships upon it, so that they would seek the bounty of Allah whether it was ships for trade or for fishing, and that man may thanks His Lord for subjugating the sea for him. Allah also has subjected whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth from the sun, moon, stars, trees, animals, mountains, and many others to serve man, and all these blessings are from Allah, and there are many signs in them for those who reflect and give reason, and then believe in Allah the Creator who is Able to do everything.
Allah says in the next two verses (14,15) "Say to those who believe to forgive those who do not hope the days of Allah so that He may recompense a people for what they used to earn, whoever does righteousness, then it is for himself, and whoever does evil, then it is against it, then to your Lord, you will be returned", that is, Allah commanded His Messenger Muhammad (PBUH) to urge the believers to pardon the polytheists who do not fear the days of Allah which may carry torment or bliss, and Allah will recompense a people for what they used to earn, and it was said that this verse was abrogated later when Allah commanded the believers to fight the polytheists in more than one verse as in Surat Alhajj Aya (39), Surat Altawbah Aya (36), and Surat Alanfal Aya (57). Then Allah assures that all mankind will return to Him on the day of resurrection, so whoever does righteous deeds, the benefit of them will only return to Him because Allah will reward Him with the best reward, and his destiny will be Paradise, but as for the one who does evil deeds, it is only due to himself because he harmed himself by gaining the wrath of Allah and deserving the painful torment, so his destiny will be Hellfire.
Allah says in the next two verses (16,17) "And indeed, We gave the children of Israel the Book and the judgment and the prophethood and provided them from good things, and We preferred them above the worlds, and We gave them a clear proofs of the matter, and they did not differ except after the knowledge had come to them, tyranny between them, indeed, Your Lord will judge between them on the day of resurrection in that about which they used to differ", that is, Allah enumerates His blessings upon the children of Israel, where He sent upon them the Books such as Torah and Gospel, the judgment of Allah and understanding their books and their rulings, the prophecy, where He made Prophets and Messengers from among themselves, and provided them from good and lawful sustenance of foods and fruits, preferring them above the worlds in their time, and He gave them clear arguments and proofs related to the prophet Muhammad whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel as mentioned in Aya (157) of Surat Ala'raf, but they did not differ except after the knowledge had come to them and the Prophet Muhammad became present before their eyes, some believed and others disbelieved out of their stubbornness and tyranny for the sake of the worldly life, so Allah reassured His Messenger and said to Him Your Lord will judge between them on the day of resurrection about what they used to differ regarding Your matter.
Allah continues to address His Messenger in the next three verses (18-20) where He says "Then We put you on a guidance from the matter, so follow it and do not follow the whims of those who do not know, indeed, they did not avail You against Allah in anything, and indeed, the wrongdoers are allies of one another, and Allah is the Protector of the righteous, this is enlightenment for mankind and guidance and mercy for a people who are certain", that is, Allah has placed His Messenger on the path of guidance and truth by making clear to Him the command, prohibition, limits, and obligations, then He commanded Him to follow the path of guidance from His Lord and not to follow the whims of the polytheists who do not know truth from falsehood or guidance from error, because if He followed their whims, they will not avail Him in anything of Allah's punishment, the wrongdoers are allies of one another and their loyalty to one another increases them in loss and destruction and it will be of no use on the day of resurrection, but Allah is the Protector of the righteous who follow His path and do what He commanded and avoid what He forbade. Then Allah confirms that the Holy Quran is enlightenment of the truth, the rulings, and the limits for mankind, and it is a guidance to the straight path and a mercy from Allah for those who are certain.
Allah says in the next two verses (21,22) "Do those who have committed evil deeds think that We will make them like those who believed and did righteous deeds, their life and their death alike, evil is what they judge?, and Allah has created the heavens and the earth in truth and that every soul may be recompensed for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged", that is, Allah refutes a false belief among the polytheists who think that Allah will make those who disobeyed Him and commit evil deeds like those who believed in Him and did righteous deeds, so Allah confirms that their life and their death alike and evil is what they judge where Allah says in Aya (20) of Surat Alhashr "Not equal are the companions of Hellfire, and the companions of Paradise, the companions of Paradise are the winners". Justice is the law of Allah in His creation where He has created the heavens and the earth in truth and He will recompense man in the Hereafter for what he has earned in the worldly life, and they will not be wronged, each according to his deeds, so the wrongdoers will be recompensed for their evil deeds and nothing will be added to their sins, whereas nothing will be deprived from the reward of the good-doers.
Then Allah describes the infidel who follows his whims and denies the resurrection in the next three verses (23-25) and says "Have you seen he who has taken his desire as his god, and Allah led him astray despite having knowledge, and has sealed his hearing and his heart and He put a covering over his sight, then who will guide him after Allah, then will you not be reminded, and they say it is nothing but our worldly life, we die and live, and nothing destroys us except the time, and they have not any knowledge of that, they do nothing but make conjecture, and when Our clear verses are recited to them, their argument is nothing but they say, bring our fathers, if you are truthful", that is, the infidel follows his own whims without guidance from Allah, so he obeys it in whatever it desires even if it is falsehood, therefore, Allah made him astray for His foreknowledge that he would not be guided, and Allah has sealed his hearing and his heart and He put a covering over his sight, so he does not hear what will benefit him, nor is he aware of anything that will guide him, nor does he see the arguments that demonstrate Allah's oneness, so whoever chooses the path of misguidance, Allah will lead him astray, and He will not find anyone to guide him after Allah and whoever thinks and reflects will be sure of that and that is why Allah says "Then will you not be reminded".
The infidels do not only follow their whims, but they deny the resurrection from the graves on the day of resurrection where they deny the Hereafter and say that there is nothing but the worldly life, and that they live and die therein, and nothing destroys them but the passing of nights and days and longevity of life, denying that they have a Lord who destroys them, so Allah confirms that they have not any knowledge of that and they only guess because the time they are talking about is in the hands of Allah, where Allah's Messenger said in narration of Abu Hurayrah: "Allah said the son of Adam hurts Me for he abuses time though I am Time, in My hand are all thing, and I cause the revolution of day and night". They insist on their arrogance and stubbornness in denying the resurrection when Allah's clear verses are recited to them that demonstrate His Ability to revive the dead where they say "Bring our fathers, if you are truthful".
Allah responds to those who denied the resurrection and demanded the revival of their fathers in the next four verses (26-29), where He says "Say, Allah gives you life, then causes you to die, then He will gather you to the day of resurrection about which there is no doubt, but most people do not know, and to Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and the day when the Hour will establish, that day the adherent of falsehood will lose, and you will see every nation kneeling, every nation will be called to its record, today you will be recompensed for what you used to do, this Our record, speaks against you in truth, indeed, We used to transcribe what you used to do", that is, Allah commanded His Messenger to say to the polytheists that He will give them life in the worldly life as He wills, then He will cause them to die when He wills, and undoubtedly He will gather them all on the day of resurrection about which there is no doubt, so it will inevitably happen but most people do not know because they rule out its occurrence. Then Allah confirms that He is the Owner of the heavens and the earth, and He is the Ruler of the worldly life and the Hereafter, so on the day of resurrection when the Hour will establish, the disbelievers and the adherent of falsehood will lose Paradise where they used to turn the truth into falsehood, and to deny the resurrection and what Allah has revealed to His Messenger of clear signs and evidences.
When the Hour will come, the people of each religion will kneel on their knees from the terrors of that day, and they will be called to the book of their deeds, so they will be recompensed for what they used to do in the worldly life of good and evil, and it will be said to them "This Our record, speaks against you in truth", as their book preserves all their deeds without addition or deficiency, and the Angels write their deeds which are copies of what Allah wrote before He created them.
Allah says in the next four verses (30-33) "So as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His Mercy, that is the clear success, but as those who disbelieved, were not My verses recited to you, but you were arrogant and you were a criminal people, and when it was said, indeed, the promise of Allah is truth, and the Hour, there is no doubt therein, you said, we do not know what the Hour is, we think only a conjecture, and we are not convinced, and the evil of what they did will appear to them, so they have been encircled by what they used to ridicule it", that is, Allah will admit into His Mercy, which is Paradise, those who believed in Him and His Messenger and did righteous deeds, and that is the great success, but as for those who disbelieved it will be said to them on the day of resurrection as a kind of reprimand "Were not My verses recited to you, but you were arrogant and you were a criminal people", as they were arrogant to listen to Allah's verses, and turned away from believing in it, and they were a criminal people who earned sins, and denied the resurrection, where when it was said to them that Allah's promise of resurrection is true and the Hour will inevitably happen, they say "We do not know what the Hour is, we think only a conjecture, and we are not convinced", as they do not know if the Hour is true or false, all they have is only conjecture and they have no certainty about it, so on the day of resurrection, the bad consequence of their evil deeds in the worldly life will appear to them, and they will be surrounded by what they were mocking of Allah's torment.
Thereupon, Allah threatens them with the Hellfire in the next two verses (34,35) "And it will be said, today we forget you just as you forgot the meeting of this day of yours, and your abode is the fire, and there are no helpers for you, that is because you took the verses of Allah as a ridicule, and the worldly life deceived you, so that day, they will not be brought out of it, nor will they be asked to appease", that is, it will be said to those who denied the resurrection "Today we forget you just as you forgot the meeting of this day of yours", that is, Allah will leave the disbelievers in the torment of Hellfire just as they forgot the meeting of the day of resurrection and did not prepare faith and good deeds for it, and as narrated by Abu Hurayrah and Abu Sa'eed that Allah's Messenger said: "The servant will be brought on the day of resurrection, and Allah will say to him, Did I not give you hearing, sight, wealth, children, and did I not make the cattle and tillage subservient to you, and did I not leave you as the head of people taking from their wealth, Did you not think that you would have to meet this day of yours?, so he will say, no, so He will say to him Today you shall be forgotten just as you have forgotten Me" (Jami' Altirmidhi 2428).
So the Hellfire will be their refuge and they will not find any helper who will save them from the torment of that day. They deserved the torment because they took Allah's verses and arguments as a ridicule and mock, and because the worldly life deceived them with its falsehoods, illusions, and enjoyments, as they thought that there is no other than it, and that there is no resurrection as mentioned above in Aya (24), therefore, Allah confirms that they will not be brought out of the Hellfire nor will they asked to appease by offering excuses.
Allah says in the last two verses (36,37) "So, for Allah is all praise, the Lord of the heavens, the Lord of the earth, the Lord of the worlds, and to Him belongs the grandeur in the heavens and the earth and He is the All-mighty, the All-Wise" that is, all praise be to Allah alone for all blessings that He has bestowed upon His creation where He is the Owner and Lord of the heavens, the earth and the worlds, and the grandeur and pride in the heavens and the earth belong to Him alone where as narrated by Abu Hurayrah, Allah's Messenger said that Allah said in Alhadith Alqudsi: "Pride is My cloak and greatness is My robe, and he who competes Me in respect of either of them, I shall cast him into Hellfire", and Allah is All-Mighty who is Severe in His revenge on those who disobeyed Him, and He is All-Wise who manages His creation with wisdom in His laws and destiny.
