Mercy over wrath |
The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (PBUH), said in narration of of Abu Hurayrah: "When Allah completed the creation, He wrote in His Book which is with Him on His Throne, indeed, My mercy overpowers My anger" (Sahih Albukhari 3194).
Commentary:
The mercy of Allah has been mentioned in many verses of the Holly Quran, such as Ayat (56,156) of Surat Ala'raf , where Allah, Almighty, has stated that His mercy is near of the good doers., and that His mercy encompasses every thing, and He will decree it for those who fear and give the Zakah, and those who believe in His verses.
So the mercy of Allah, Almighty, depends on good and righteous deeds, and one's misdeeds can exclude him from the mercy of Allah. So being good in deeds and acting in obedience to Allah are necessary to obtain His mercy. But the people mustn't lose hope for the mercy of Allah even if they have made misdeeds and sins; For Allah has commanded His Messenger (PBUH) to inform His servants that He accepts the repentance of those who did evil deeds saying in Ayat (49,50) of Surat Alhijr "Inform My servants that it is I am the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful, and that My punishment is the painful punishment". This means that people must be in hope for Allah's mercy and in fear of His punishment and to be away from sins, but if they have already fallen in misdeeds and evil, the first thing to do is to repent and ask forgiveness from Allah.
The Messenger of Allah Muhammad (PBUH) said in narration of Shaddad bin Aws that the most superior way of asking forgiveness from Allah is: "Allahumma anta rabbi la illaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana abduka, wa ana ala ahdika wa wa'dika ma-estata'tu, a'auzu beka min sharri ma sana'tu, abu'u laka be ne'mataka alayya wa abu'u laka be-zanbi fa-eghfer lee fa innahu la yaghferu alzunuoba illa anta: O Allah! You are my Lord, there is none worthy of worship but You. You created me and I am Your servant, I keep Your covenant, and my pledge to You so far as I am able, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done, I admit to Your blessing upon me, and I admit to You my sin, so Forgive me for there is none who may forgive sins but You, the Messenger of Allah added, if somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise, and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise" (Sahih Albukhari 6306).
