How did the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) perform ablution?.

Allah Almighty says in Aya (6) of Surat Alma'idah {O you who have believed! When you rise for prayer, then Wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and Wipe your heads and Wash your feet up to the ankles, and if you are in a state of Janabah, then Purify yourselves, but if you are ill or on a journey or anyone of you has come from the toilet or you have contacted women and you do not find water, so Perform Tayyammum with clean dust, and Wipe your faces and your hands with it, Allah does not intend to place on you any hardship, but He intends to purify you and to complete His favor upon you so that you may give thanks}.

The ablution is a basic condition of the acceptance of prayer, where as narrated by Abu Almalih from his father: "The Prophet (PBUH) said Allah does not accept charity from goods acquired by embezzlement nor does He accept prayer without purification" (Sunan Abu Dawood 59), and as narrated by Abu Hurayrah: "The Messenger of Allah said Allah does not accept the prayer of any of you when you are defiled until you perform ablution"(Sunan Abu Dawood 60). And it is obligatory to mention the Name of Allah at the beginning of ablution, where as narrated by Abu Hurayrah: "The Messenger of Allah said the prayer of a person who does not perform ablution is not valid, and the ablution of a person who does not mention the Name of Allah is not valid" (Sunan Abu Dawood 101).

And Allah's Messenger used to perform ablution for every prayer as narrated by Amro bin Amir: "Anas said the Prophet (PBUH) used to perform ablution for every prayer, I asked Anas What did you used to do?, Anas replied we used to pray with the same ablution until we break the ablution (with something that invalidated the ablution" (Sahih Albukhari 214). And Allah's Messenger has made it lighter for His Ummah when He intentionally assured that ablution is not required for every prayer, but it is permissible to perform more than one prayer with one ablution, where as narrated by Sulaiyman bin Buraiydah from his father: "The Messenger of Allah offered prayers with one ablution on the day of conquest (Mecca), and wiped over the socks, Umar said to Him today You have done something that You did not do before, He said O Umar! I have done it intentionally" (Sahih Muslim 277).

Ablution is a great way to Allah's forgiveness as a person's sins fall from every organ he washes or wipes, where as narrated by Amr bin Abasa Alsulami: "I said O Allah's Prophet! Tell me about ablution, He said none of you who uses water for ablution and rinses his mouth, snuffs up water and blows it, but his sins of his face, his mouth, and his nostrils fall out, when he washes his face as Allah has commanded him, the sins of his face fallout from the end of his beard with water, then he washes his forearms up to the elbows, the sins of his arms fall out along with water from his fingertips, and when he wipes his head, the sins of his head fall out from the points of his hear along with water, and when he washes his feet up to the ankles, the sins of his feet fall out from his toes along with water, and if he stands to pray and praises Allah, lauds Him and glorifies Him with what He deserves, and shows wholehearted devotion to Allah, his sins would depart leaving him as he was on the day his mother bore him. Amr bin Abasa narrated this hadith to Abu Umamah, a companion of Allah's Messenger (PBUH), and Abu Umamah said to him Amr bin Abasa! Think what you are saying that such is given to a man at one place (ablution), upon this, Amr said Abu Umamah I have grown old and my bones have become weak and I am at the door of death, what impetus is there for me to attribute a lie against Allah and the Messenger of Allah, Had I heard it from the Messenger of Allah once, twice, or three times, till he counted seven times, I would have never narrated it, but I have heard it from Him on occasions more than these" (Sahih Muslim 832).

And Uthman bin Affan had made clear how did Allah's Messenger (PBUH) perform ablution as narrated by Humran, the freed slave of Uthman bin Affan: "I saw Uthman bin Affan asking (for a tumbler of water) to perform ablution, and when it was brought, he poured water from it over his hands and washed them thrice and then put his right hand in the water container, and rinsed his mouth and washed his nose by putting water in it, and then blowing it out. Then he washed his face thrice and forearms up to the elbows thrice, then passed his wet hands over his head and then washed each foot thrice, after that Uthman said I saw the Prophet (PBUH) performing ablution like this of mine, and He said if anyone performs ablution like that of Mine and offers a two rak'ahs during which he does not think of anything else, then his past sins will be forgiven" (Sahih Albukhari 164). And as narrated by Asim bin Laqit bin Sabrah from his father: "I said O Messenger of Allah! Inform me about ablution, so He said Perform ablution in full (well), and go between the fingers, and Snuff up water extensively except when you are fasting" (Jami' Altirmidhi 788).
