How did the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) perform ablution?.

Our prophet Muhammad peace be upon Him (pbuh) said: the key to Salat (prayer) is wudu' (ablution), and said: "no prayer without purification (wudu')".

And in a similar Hadith, the prophet said: the prayer of none amongst you would be accepted in state of impurity until he performs ablution (wudu'), and He also said: I was commanded to perform wudu' when I stand up for prayer.

And about ablution Allah Azza wa Galla says in Surat Alma'eda aya 6: "O believers, when you stand up for prayer for the service of prayer wash your faces, and hands up to elbows, and also wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles, if you are in state of impurity then bathe and purify yourself well, but if you are in ill, or are in travelling, or any one of you has come  from the toilet, or has contact with the women, and you cannot find water, then take clean dust (clean earth) and wipe (pass it) over your faces and your hands with it,  Allah does not intend to impose any difficulty for you, He intends to purify you, and to complete his favour upon you, so that you may be grateful.

Here Allah, Almighty, commanded performing wudu' for the prayer, this is a command obligation in the case of impurity, and in the case of purity, it is merely a recommendation .

How did the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) perform wudu'?.

The prophet ( pbuh) said: there is no ablution for he who does not mention Allah's name over it, and He used to say at the beginning of wudu': I begin in the name of Allah, Who is the most Merciful, the most Gracious, you can say it in Arabic: bismi ellahi alrahmani Alraheem

And during wudu' He says: O Allah, forgive my sins, and widen my grave, and grant barakat in my sustenance, you can say it in Arabic: Rabi eghfer lee zanby wa wasee'a lee fee dary wa barek lee fee rezky.

And as narrated by Humran, the freed slave of Uthman bin Affan: "I saw Uthman bin Affan asking (for a tumbler of water) to perform ablution, and when it was brought, he poured water from it over his hands and washed them thrice and then put his right hand in the water container, and rinsed his mouth and washed his nose by putting water in it, and then blowing it out. Then he washed his face thrice and forearms up to the elbows thrice, then passed his wet hands over his head and then washed each foot thrice, after that Uthman said I saw the Prophet (PBUH) performing ablution like this of mine, and He said if anyone performs ablution like that of Mine and offers a two rak'ahs during which he does not think of anything else, then his past sins will be forgiven" (Sahih Albukhari 164).

What about I imagined to have passed wind (gas) during the prayer, our prophet replied: you should  not leave the prayer unless you hears sound or smells something (gas).
