Simplified interpretation:
Surat Almunafiquon came as news from Allah to His Messenger about the hypocrites, led by Abdullah Bin Ubai Bin Salul, who claim the faith but in reality they are fighting Islam and want to stop the call to it, and Allah informed His messenger that they were the enemy and told Him what they say and what they do behind his back and commanded Him to beware of them, then Allah warns the believers not to follow the path of the hypocrites.
Allah addresses His Messenger Muhammad (PBUH) in the first three verses and says "When the hypocrites come to You, they say: We testify that you Are surely the Messenger of Allah, and Allah knows that You are surely His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars, they take their oaths as cover, so they prevented from the way of Allah, indeed, evil is what they were doing, that is because they believed, then they disbelieved, so it was sealed upon their hearts, so they do not understand", that is, the hypocrites used to utter the testimony that our Prophet is the Messenger of Allah if they come to Him, but in reality, they are not like that, thereupon, Allah says that He knows that He is His Messenger, that is, although what they say is true, but they lie in their claim of faith because they say by their tongues other than what their chests conceal. Also they take their oaths as a shield to protect themselves, and as a result of their hypocrisy, they prevented others from the way of Allah, so Allah describes their deeds from their hypocrisy, their false oaths, and preventing others from the way of Allah as evil "evil is what they were doing", and what led them to this state is that they believed, then they disbelieved, so Allah has sealed upon their hearts that no guidance will reach them, so they are neither guided nor aware of what is good and what is evil for them.
And Allah says to His Messenger in the next verse (4) "And when You see them, their bodies please You, and if they speak You listen to their speech as if they were propped up pieces of wood, they think every shout to be against them, they are the enemy, so beware of them, may Allah destroy them, How are they being turned away?". The hypocrites were the most handsome men as described by Zaid Bin Arqam, and if the listener hears them, he will listen to their words because of their eloquence, yet they are extremely weak, anxious, frightened, and cowardly, and while you see them as if they were propped up pieces of wood because of their beauty, they are afraid from every shout and they think that Allah will bring down something against them, and then Allah says to His Messenger that they are the enemy and commanded Him to beware of them, and Allah cursed them, how they are led astray and diverted from guidance to error.
Then Allah says in the next two verses (5,6) "And when it is said to them, come, the Messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you, they turn their heads aside, and You see them turning away while they are arrogant, whether You ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them, Allah will not forgive them, indeed, Allah does not guide the disobedient people", that is, when it was said to the hypocrites "come to the Messenger of Allah, and He will ask forgiveness for you, they nodded their heads in mockery, arrogance, and contempt for what was said to them, where as narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah: "The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said who climbed this hill, the hill of Murar, his sins would be obliterated the sins of the Children of Israel, so the first to climb it were the horses of ours, the horses of Banu Khazraj, then there was a ceaseless flow of the people, and Allah's Messenger said all of you are those who have been pardoned except the owner of the red camel, thereupon, we came to him and said to him Come so that Allah's Messenger may seek forgiveness for you, but he said the finding of something lost is dearer to me than seeking forgiveness for me by your companion (Allah's Messenger), and he remained busy in finding out his lost thing" (Sahih Muslim 2780), thereupon Allah says to His Messenger "whether You ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them, Allah will not forgive them", and this was an acknowledgment that Allah's torment awaits them, and they are deprived of His pardon and forgiveness, that is because, Allah does not guide the disobedient people, and those who oppose Him, and His Messenger.
And Allah says in the next two verses (7,8) "They are those who say, do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse, and to Allah belongs the treasures of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand, they say, if we return to Almadinah, the more honorable surely will expel from it, the more humiliated, but the honor belongs to Allah, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know", where as narrated by Zaid Bin Arqam "I was with My uncle and I heard Abdullah Bin Ubai Bin Salul, saying "Do not spend on those who are with Allah's Messenger that they may disperse and go away from Him", he also said "If we return to Madinah, surely, the more honorable will expel the more humiliated", so I informed my uncle of that, and then my uncle informed Allah's Messenger thereof. Allah's Messenger sent for Abdullah Bin Ubai and his companions, they swore that they did not say anything of that sort, Allah's Messenger deemed their statement true and rejected mine, thereof, I became as distressed as I have never been before, and stayed at home, then Allah revealed "When the hypocrites come to you" to His saying "They are those who say, do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah" to His saying "The more honorable surely will expel from it, the more humiliated", Allah's Messenger sent to Me and recited that Surah for me and said "Allah has confirmed your statement", and Zaid added in another narration that Allah's Messenger called them that they might ask Allah to forgive them, but they turned their head aside as mentioned above in Aya (5).
And about the incident in which Abdullah Bin Ubai Bin Salul said "The more honorable surely will expel from it, the more humiliated", it was mentioned in narration of Jabir Bin Abdullah where he said: "We were in a battle (Ghazwa) and a man from the emigrants kicked an Ansari, the Ansari said O the Ansar! (help), and the emigrant said O the emigrants! (help), when Allah's Messenger heard that, He said "What is that?", they said, a man from the emigrants kicked a man from the Ansar (on the buttocks his foot), on that the Ansari said O the Ansar!, and the emigrant said O the emigrants, the Prophet said "Leave it for it is a detestable thing", the number of Ansar was larger at the time when the Prophet came to Almadinah, but later the number of emigrants increased, Abdullah Bin Ubai said ''Have they done so? (the emigrants), By Allah, if we return to Madinah, the more honorable surely will expel from it, the more humiliated, Umar Bin Alkhattab said "O Allah's Messenger! let me chop off the head of this hypocrite, the Prophet said "Leave him lest the people say Muhammad kills His companions".
And in response to what they said, Allah says that the treasures of the heavens and the earth belongs to Him alone, and He gives whom He wills whenever He wills, and He does not need their expenditure, and they are the more humiliated, and the honor belongs to Allah, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not understand and do not know that.
And Allah says in the next verse (9) "O! you who believe, let neither your wealth nor your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah, and whoever does that, then those are the losers", that is, Allah warns the believers not to follow the path of the hypocrites, and that their wealth and their children do not distract them from the remembrance of Allah, and Allah describes the wealth and the children as a trial in Surat Altaghabun Aya (15) "Verily, your wealth and your children are a trial, and Allah has with Him a great reward", because they are not free from the temptation and the preoccupation of the heart with them, and whoever is distracted by the adornment of the worldly life which is wealth and children as mentioned in Surat Alkahf Aya (46), he will be among the losers on the day of resurrection.
Therefore, Allah urges the believers to spend in the way of Allah in Aya (10) "And spend from what We have provided for you before the death come to one of you, and he says, My Lord, why not You delay me to a near term, so I would give charity, and will be among the righteous", where Allah commands the believers to expedite spending in the way of Allah, and do not delay it until the death come to them, and then they will ask Allah to prolong his life so he can give alms, and do righteous deeds, and Allah confirms in the last verse (11) that He will not delay the term of anyone, and He is All-Aware of what His servants do whether it is good deeds or evil deeds "And Allah will never delay a soul when its term will come, and Allah is All-Aware of what you do".
