How to protect yourself while sleeping?.

Abu Hurayrah (Radia Allahu Anhu) said that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) assigned him to keep watch over the charity (Zakat) of Ramadan, then a person came and started stealing handfuls of foodstuff,  Abu Hurayrah caught him and said: By Allah, I will take you to Allah's Messenger.

But he asked Abu Hurayrah to release him, for he is meek and he is in great need and have many dependents. Then Abu Hurayrah released him, and in the morning our Prophet Muhammad asked Abu Hurayrah: what did your prisoner do yesterday, O Abu Hurayrah?.

Abu Hurayrah said: O Allah's Messenger! I pitied him and let him go for he complained of being needy and having many dependents,  then the prophet said: indeed,  he told you a lie and will coming again. So Abu Hurayrah watched for him for Allah's Messenger had told Abu Hurayrah that he would return,  and when he came again and started stealing handfuls of foodstuff,  Abu Hurayrah caught him again and said that He will definitely take him to Allah's Messenger,  but he repeated his words again and mentioned his neediness and his dependents,  and promise him that he will not come back again.

In the morning Allah's messenger asked Abu Hurayrah again:  what did your prisoner do last night, O Abu Hurayrah?  Abu Hurayrah replied that he complained of great need and too many dependents and he pitied him and set him free. Then the Messenger said, verily: he told you a lie and he will return.

Attentively,  Abu Hurayrah waited for him for the third time,  and when he came and start stealing handfuls of foodstuff,  Abu Hurayrah caught him and said He will surely take him to Allah's Messenger as it is the third time and he promise not to return but he returned.

The prisoner said to Abu Hurayrah please do not take me to Allah's Messenger and I will tell you a few words by which Allah will benefit you.

Abu Hurayrah asked: what are they?.

He said:  when you go to your bed,  recite Ayat Alkursi ''Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa Alhayuu Alqayuom "till you finish the whole verse for then there will be a guard from Allah who will protect you all night long and Shaytan (Iblis) will not be able to come near you till morning.

Abu Hurayrah released him,  and in the morning Allah's Messenger asked him the same question, then Abu Hurayrah said that he claimed that he would teach me some words by which Allah will grant me some benefit, so I set him free.

When The Prophet heard what he said about Ayat Alqursi,  He said to Abu Hurayrah: he spoke the truth, although he is a liar. Then The Prophet asked Abu Hurayrah: Do you know whom you were talking to these three nights,  O Abu Hurayrah?,  He said: no.  The Prophet said: it was Shaytan (Iblis).

what is Ayat Alqursi?

Ayat Alqursi is Aya number 255 of Surat Albaqarah and consists of ten sentences, and it is the greatest Ayah in the Holy Quran. Our Prophet Muhammad said about it: there is a verse in Surat Albaqarah which is the Chief (Sayyidat) of the verses of the Quran,  the Shaytan leaves the house where it is recited.

Ayat Alqursi:

"Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa,  Alhayuu Alqayuom,  la ta'khuzuhu senatun wala nawmunn, lahu mafi alsamawati wa mafi alardd,  man za allazi yashfa'uo endahu illa beiznehi, ya'lamu ma baina aiydehm wa ma khalfahum, wa la yuohetuouna beshay'in men elmehi illa bema sha'aa, wase'a quorsiyhu alsamawati wa alardd, wa la ya'uoduhu hefzuhuma, wa huwa alalyiuu alazim".

Its meaning:

"Allah,  there is no God but He,  the Ever-living,  the All-Sustaining,  neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth,  who can intercede with Him without His permission? He knows what is presently before them and what will be after them,  and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His qursi (chair) extends over the heavens and the earth,  and their preservation tires Him not,  He is the Most-high, the Suprime (The Magnificent)"
