The story of creation of Adam

 When Allah , Almighty, decided to create Adam, He spoke to the Angels and told them that He will create upon the earth a vicegerent (successive authority), then they said will you place therein one who will spread corruption (disorder) in it and sheds bloods, while we  already glorify you with your praises and we extol your holiness?. Allah answered them saying "I know what you do not know".

 Here the Angels submitted that they could not understand why men were being chosen to be the deputies, for some of them would shed blood and spread disorder on the earth. The angels knew this fact according to their understanding of human nature, for Allah stated that He would create man from clay or the angels understood this fact from the word khalifah, which also means the person who judges disputes that occur between people, forbidding them from injustice and sin. They thought that they themselves were more suited to perform this function, as the nature of angels is wholly good, no evil deed can possibly come out of them, they are totally obedient to Allah, and should hence be more capable of managing the affairs of the world.

 Before the appearance of man, the angels had taken it for granted that Allah would not create a being who should be superior to them and greater in knowledge, but Allah knew that He would create a being who would be superior to all other creatures and greater than them in knowledge, then Allah taught Adam the names, all of them, then He displayed the objects of these names to the angels and said: tell me the names of these if you are truthful (right).

 the angels said to Allah: Glory to be you, we have no knowledge except what you have taught us, indeed, you are the All-knowing, the All-wise. then Allah said to Adam: inform them their names, so when Adam had told them their names Allah said to the angels: did I not tell you that, indeed, I know the unseen (hidden realities) of the heavens and of the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you were conceal?.

 Allah stated the virtue of Adam above the angels because He taught Adam rather than them, the names of every thing, here Adam was given the rank of a teacher, and the angels that of pupils, thus the angels came to know that Allah favored Adam above them regarding knowledge and honor.

 then Allah said to the angels: prostrate to Adam (make obeisance), so they prostrated except Iblis, he refused stubbornly and waxed proud, and he became one of the disbelievers.

   

 You can find the story of Adam's creation in Surat Albaqarah ayat 30-34, and our prophet Muhammad (PBUH) told us that when Allah created Adam, making him 60 cubits tall. When He created him, He said to him, go and greet that group of angels, and listen to their reply, for it will be your greeting (salutation of your offspring). So Adam said to angels As-salamu Alaikum (peace be upon you), the angels said As-salamu aliaka wa Rahmatu Allahi (peace and Allah's mercy be upon you), thus the angels added to Adam's salutation the expression "wa Rahmatu Allahi" any person who will enter paradise will resemble Adam (in appearance and figure) . People have been decreasing in stature since Adam's creation (Sahih Albukhari, book 60, Hadith no.1).
